Johnson Leads Mid-Amateur; Daniel Paces Senior Amateur

2nd Annual LNGA Championships Begin in Arizona

TUBAC, Ariz. (April 26) – Kay Daniel of Covington, La., leads in the Senior Championship after carding an even par-72, and Gretchen Johnson of Portland, Ore., shot 2-over 72 to pace the Mid-Amateur Championship of the Ladies National Golf Association (LNGA) Tuesday at Tubac Golf Resort.

Daniel recently won the title at the Senior Amateur Championship at Tamahka Trails Golf Club. Today she posted sixteen pars against one bogey, which was evened out with a birdie on a par-3. Johnson was crowned champion of the 18th PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Arrowhead Golf Course. Johnson finished the day with sixteen pars and two bogeys.

In the Senior Division, Daniel has three competitors following closely behind with scores of one over par. Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Shelly Haywood of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Kelly Morris of Franklin Tenn., are all currently tied for second place. In the Mid-Am Division, Amanda Jacobs of Portland Ore., and Samantha Postillion of Scottsdale Ariz., were right on the tail of Johnson, and both shot 3-over 72, tying for second on this first day of play.

Among the foothills of the Santa Rita and Tumacacori Mountain ranges, the LNGA ladies enjoyed a beautiful desert day under the sun. The wind picked up in the early afternoon to make for an interesting finish. At Tubac Resort, the home of Tin Cup, free-roaming cows, and wild horses bask in the sun among 500 acres on the historic Otero Ranch.  With the desert, comes interesting obstacles including fire ants, cacti, and cow pies. The ladies handled these critters and native plants with grace and withheld from breaking all of their clubs.

Both championships are 54-hole, stroke-play events in their second year and are conducted by the Ladies National Golf Association. The Mid-Amateur Championship is for players 25-years-old and up with an index in the World Handicap System not exceeding 10.4. The Senior Amateur Championship is for players 50-year-old and up with an index in World Handicap System not exceeding 14.4. The Wilma Cup, in honor of the departed women’s golf advocate and LNGA leader Wilma Gilliland, will be presented to the Mid-Amateur and Senior Amateur champions and remain in their custody for a year.
